Why Prune Your Trees?

Pruning isn't just about maintaining the aesthetic appeal of your trees; it's a vital practice that ensures their health, longevity, and safety. Trees, like all living beings, require care and attention to thrive. Here's why pruning should be a regular part of your tree care routine:

Tree Health & Longevity

Over time, trees can develop dead or diseased branches. Pruning these away not only prevents the spread of diseases but also allows for better air circulation and sunlight penetration, which is essential for photosynthesis.

Aesthetic
Appeal

A well-pruned tree is not only healthier but also more beautiful. Pruning shapes the tree, enhancing its natural form and complementing your landscape's overall design.

Can you prune trees near power lines?

It depends on which type of electrical wires are near your tree. We can often prune trees near secondary lines (between your house and the primary power lines). However, if your tree is growing into the primary wires, pruning may need to be done by the utility company. We’ll let you know if we can safely do the work when we inspect the tree to give you an estimate.

Safety

Dead or weak branches can fall without warning, posing a risk to people, pets, and property. Regular pruning ensures these potential hazards are removed, keeping your family and home safe.

Protecting Your Property

Overgrown branches can interfere with power lines or encroach on your home, potentially causing damage. Pruning ensures trees grow in the desired direction and keeps them clear of structures and utilities.

Fruit Production

For fruit trees, pruning can significantly improve the quantity and quality of the crop. By removing dead or overcrowded branches, the tree can focus its energy on producing larger, juicier fruits.

Coastal South Shore Tree Pruning

At one time, South Shore towns like Norwell and Duxbury were primarily farming communities in which trees were removed to make way for crops or to use in shipbuilding. Now, however, much of the area is developed or consists of overgrown former farmland interspersed with patches of oak-white pine forest and shrubland.

Wondering why that matters? Because it means our region has a mix of large, mature trees and smaller trees planted within the last 20 years. These two types of trees need different types of pruning.

Large Tree Pruning

Larger trees tend to have heavier branches, may be overgrown, and can have cracks, cavities, and decay that make them more prone to failure. It also means you'll want any pruning work to be done by a tree service with experienced arborists and a stellar safety record.

Smaller Tree Pruning

Recently planted and smaller trees often need pruning to develop a strong structure and attractive shape. This work may be done from the ground but that doesn't mean it's easy!

Do you have a tree service crane?

Yes, we do! We own a Grove 60-ton crane with a boom that can extend out to 110 feet. Operated by one of our skilled technicians, the crane lets us work on trees that are difficult to access or potentially unstable.

If you have pets, they may need a little TLC from you. Tree work can be noisy, especially when the chainsaws and chipper are in use, and the loud sounds may frighten pets.

01

When our crew arrives, we know you’ll want to watch them in action! However, once we’ve introduced ourselves and confirmed with you the pruning work we’ll be doing, we’ll ask you to return to your home and stay inside while we work.

02

Before starting work, we establish a drop zone around the tree into which branches are lowered after they’re cut off. Entry into this area is restricted to only trained Top Notch employees so we can keep everyone safe and avoid being distracted by people wandering into a dangerous work zone.

03

Tree trimming can be a dangerous job, particularly when trees are larger, damaged, or near powerlines. We wear specialized safety gear and have extensive experience and training that allows us to do the work as safely as possible.

04

We also use heavy equipment when needed to access hard-to-reach parts of the tree or to safely work on a hazardous tree. You may see us using a crane to lift large limbs after they’ve been cut or a bucket truck from which our tree pruning professionals can reach into upper parts of the tree to make precision pruning cuts.

05

Often, there will be a chip truck and chipper parked on the street in front of your house. Cut branches are fed through the chipper and turned into wood chips that we transport away from your property.

06

When we’re finished pruning your tree, we rake up any debris from the work. Sometimes we’ll use a blower to clean up smaller twigs and sawdust. All of that is placed in the chip truck, leaving you with a yard looks like we were never there (other than the beautifully pruned tree!).

07

We’ll check in with you before we leave to show you the completed work and answer any questions you may have about after care, payment, etc. And we’ll ask you to leave us an online review if you’re happy with our work (those reviews make a huge difference to local companies like ours).

How to Prepare for Tree Pruning Work

Many South Shore residents have never had their trees pruned (if that’s you, don’t worry – you’re in good company!). So, if you’re wondering if there’s anything you should do to prepare your property before the tree pruning crew arrives, here’s the scoop:

  • Clear cars, bikes, scooters, or anything else from the driveway (and the street in front of the house if requested/possible). We’ll need to park our trucks and heavy equipment as close to your property as possible.

  • Remove all outdoor furniture, toys, trash cans, or other objects under or near the tree that we’ll be working on or that could be in the way of our crew.

  • If the tree is in your backyard, unlock the gate so we can get to the tree (we love climbing, but would prefer not to climb over your fence).

  • Let your neighbors know we’ll be working on your tree so they aren’t surprised to see someone in the tree outside their window.

  • Pick up any pet droppings (no one wants a smelly slip and fall accident…).

When to Prune Your Trees

Timing Isn’t Everything

Tree pruning along the Coastal South Shore of Massachusetts can be done at any time of year, even in the dead of winter (actually, winter is one of the best times to cut back trees!).

However, there are some trees that will do best when pruned at specific times. For example, you probably don’t want do cut branches off a maple tree in late winter when the sap is flowing strongly. And if you’re growing a fruit tree, you don’t want to cut off all the spring-time flowers (no flowers = no fruit).

Still, if there’s something wrong with your tree, such as broken branches (especially if they’re hanging in the tree), deadwood, or heavily diseased and dying limbs, then it’s best to prune out the branches as soon as you notice them. Fewer flowers or sticky sap are a small price to pay for your safety.
